MICHIGAN’S KOROSTETSKYI WINS DEE ZEE FLW/KBF KAYAK OPEN AT NICKAJACK LAKE PRESENTED BY YAKATTACK
Ukrainian Born Angler Bests Field of 103 Anglers in First Ever FLW/KBF Tournament, Earns $7,500
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 5, 2019) – By just a slim 2-inch margin, 23-year-old Michigan angler Bogdan Korostetskyi, won the inaugural Dee Zee FLW/KBF Kayak Open at Nickajack Lake presented by YakAttack Sunday after catching a two-day total of 174.25 inches of bass. For his win, Korostetskyi earned $5,000 and added a $2,500 Dee Zee gift card for being the highest-finishing angler in the Dee Zee contingency program.
During practice, Korostetskyi, a college student in Michigan who was born in Ukraine, said he struggled to find a consistent bite anywhere but on the bank, but he didn’t want to focus his tournament where he was afraid most of the 103 anglers in the field would be fishing. Eventually, he tracked down a couple of grassy offshore humps.
“That’s pretty much what we fish in Michigan, so I felt right at home,” he said.
On Saturday, Korostetskyi found his fish schooling on his two best spots and caught fish quickly, catching a limit by 7:15. Sunday, he fished the same places, but reversed the order, starting on a hump that took him 48 minutes to reach then finishing on another hump about halfway between the first hump and his launch point.
The bass weren’t schooling Sunday, and Korostetskyi encountered muddier water and a wind direction that had flipped 180 degrees from the day before. He needed time to figure out the best way to hold in the wind and line up for the right casting angle to get them to bite.
“It took me one hour to catch my first keeper,” he said.
His strategy was to fish his primary hump, slide off it to some nearby grassy structure to let the good spot rest, then return to it and catch more. Then he finished on his second spot on the way back.
The best humps were about 8 feet deep, with grass that was about 4 feet tall. Korostetskyi said he caught his fish with a 1/2-ounce Evergreen/Z-Man ChatterBait Jackhammer with a Z-Man DieZel MinnowZ trailer.
“It feels surreal,” Krostetskyi went on to say. “I still don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been going on three hours of sleep.
“I was not expecting that. My goal was just to do my best. It was very stressful. I think I had high expectations, but it just worked out.”

JOHN COX WINS FLW TOUR AT LAKE CHICKAMAUGA
Florida Pro Earns Fourth Career Tour Victory, Wins $100,000
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 5, 2019) – Berkley pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, won $100,000 at the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude Sunday with a four-day total of 83 pounds, 9 ounces. The victory was the fourth FLW Tour win of Cox’s career – moving him to a tie at No. 7 for the most Tour wins all-time.
Cox brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 21 pounds even to clinch the victory by a 1-pound, 11-ounce margin over local favorite Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, who brought 20 bass weighing 81-14 to the scale and earned $30,100. Tour rookie Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, who led the tournament coming into the final day, caught a four-day total of 80-5 to finish third and win $25,000.
“I can’t believe that I won,” said Cox, who also took over the points lead in the ultra-competitive Angler of the Year (AOY) race with just one event left in the regular season. “It was so tough today. I ran all over this place and had a decent limit, but not what I needed. I was bouncing around, then right before I had to check in I remembered a stretch of trees that I hadn’t checked.
“It was the last minute, and I really don’t know why it just popped in my head, but it did – go to the trees,” Cox continued. “It was weird because I had forgotten all about this area. When I pulled up and Power-Poled down, I knew before I even threw in there.”
With less than 10 minutes before he had to check-in, Cox boated a pair of 4-pounders from the trees and raced back to the Dayton Boat Dock.
“When I caught the two in the last 10 minutes, I got all worked up,” Cox said. “I was running back, and I just felt something. Tears were coming down. It was overwhelming – I don’t know. I’ve won tournaments before, but I’ve never felt anything like it before. I’m getting chills right now just talking about it. This one was different.”
Cox said he used two main baits throughout the week. He threw a Texas-rigged 6-inch Baby Bass-colored Berkley PowerBait MaxScent The General while sight fishing and a white ½-ounce Dirty Jigs jig with a white Berkley PowerBait MaxScent Meaty Chunk Trailer to cover water.
“The jig setup really came into play when the rain came in,” Cox said. “It was something that I could cover a lot of water with. I really thought the jig was going to be deal today, but I had to completely change gears at the end of the day and go back to the worm.”
With just one tournament remaining in the regular season, Cox now shifts his focus to Lake Champlain in upstate New York. He holds just a slim 1-point lead in the AOY race over Polaris pro David Dudley – a three-time AOY winner who already has an FLW Tour win on Lake Champlain on his resume.
“My two favorite lakes are Lake Chickamauga and Lake Champlain, and to finish the season on those two fisheries is great,” Cox went on to say. “I’ve been going to Lake Champlain since I was 20, and I really want to win there. But, I really, really want to win the AOY title. That would be awesome.”

Overall there were 50 bass weighing 172 pounds, 10 ounces caught by pros Sunday. All 10 of the final-day pros brought a five-bass limit to the scale.

The next event for FLW Tour anglers will be the FLW Tour at Lake Champlain presented by T-H Marine in Plattsburgh, New York, June 27-30. The tournament will be hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.
In FLW Tour competition, the full field of 165 pro anglers competed in the two-day opening round Thursday and Friday. The top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advanced to fish on Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continued competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.
Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2019 FLW Cup will be on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 9-11 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

Consistency has been the mark of 11-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier John Crews’ pro angling career. And that includes his commitment to a pre-launch routine.
The green rag you see laying on the front deck of his Bass Cat is first used to wipe the dew off his boat seats. Then he arranges it in perfect position every morning to be used as a welcome mat for his ride-along judges and marshals to wipe their feet on as they board.
Crews’ ride along judge on Sunday at Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest on Lake Fork was sweet and jovial Amy Wisdom.
She’s a 24-year-old from East Texas who couldn’t help but laugh at the site of Crews’ green welcome mat. She’s been paired with him before and knew it would be there this morning. Especially following three wet and muddy days on Lake Fork.
“Oh yea. The towel is there every time,” she laughed. “I rode with John at the Bassmaster Elite on the Sabine River when he made it to Championship Sunday, and he had the welcome mat waiting for me that morning too.”
Crews says it’s not just any old green rag. “I actually call it “The Charlie Hartley Signature Series Towel” because Charlie is the only angler I know who is so fanatical about keeping his equipment clean, he actually washes his boat in the morning beforehe launches,” laughs Crews.
Not only is Crews’ towel a nice gesture, but also a common sense move by the Virginia pro to maintain resale value on his Bass Cat by avoiding visible wear and dirt stains on the front deck carpet.
This is Amy’s third tournament to ride with the Elite Series pros, and she sees the opportunity as a fast track to learning more about the sport she loves. “I’ve always been a fan, but I’m hoping to start fishing some team tournaments with my dad, so this is a great way to learn a lot really quick,” she says.
She’ll certainly garner great knowledge on everything from how to target bass that are munching on spawning shad, to shallow crankbaits and swimbaits too.
But her first lesson of the day from Crews was one centered on courtesy, and a simple way to keep your boat carpet clean.
TABLE ROCK LAKE TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT
BRANSON, Mo. (April 30, 2019) – Table Rock Lake and the city of Branson are set to host a field of 260 bass anglers May 9-11 for the Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Central Division tournament on Table Rock Lake presented by Power-Pole. The three-day tournament, hosted by Explore Branson, will feature top regional bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize package of up to $92,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard in the pro division.
“It’s going to be one of those tournaments where everyone has a good time – they’re going to catch a lot of fish,” said FLW Tour pro Jeremy Lawyer of Sarcoxie, Missouri, who finished in third place when the FLW Series visited Table Rock Lake in 2018. “The weights may not be especially heavy because the fish are moving and it’s hard to keep them kind of hemmed up in the Ozarks around the spawn. But as far as everybody catching limits, we’ll see all three species play. It’s just going to be a fun, fun tournament.”
Lawyer went on to say it will be a “full-blown” spawn and postspawn bass event.
“I think you’ll see anglers catch 20 pounds one day, and then 12 the next,” said Lawyer. “I think a lot of the bigger fish have probably already spawned, so they’re going to be in that funk, and you can’t target 20 pounds a day sight-fishing. I think guys are going to find enough fish to really be strong one of the three days and make the cut, but by the last day, they may run out of sight-fish.
“The most productive areas will probably be in the cleanest water down-lake – you’ll be able to see what’s going on so much better,” continued Lawyer. “We’ve been getting some rain, and if the water level gets up and in the bushes, the rivers could really play. As far as the numbers of fish, though, they’re going to be strong throughout the entire lake.”
Lawyer said fans should expect to see a good topwater bite and a wide assortment of lures being thrown. He mentioned Carolina-, shaky-head-, Ned- and split-shot-rigs, as well as football-head jigs as popular choices.
Lawyer went on to say that he expects that an angler who can average 16 to 17 pounds a day (48 to 51 pounds total) should be in a good position to win.
Anglers will take off from Table Rock State Park Marina located at 380 State Park Marina Road in Branson at 6 a.m. CDT each day of competition. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will also be held at the state park beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Bass Pro Shops located at 1 Bass Pro Drive in Branson, and will begin at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Table Rock Lake, pros will fish for a top prize of up to $92,000 including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.
The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky.

“When the storm came over those mountains, it went from calm to major gusts all at once. I had to fight the wind and hail – ice was hitting my deck. The temperature dropped about 10 degrees,” FLW Kayak Bass Fishing Pro Will Mansfield.
Mansfield is one of 103 anglers competing in the FLW/KBF joint tournament on nearby Nickajack Lake while the Tour pros fish Lake Chickamauga.
Bogdan Korostetskyi of Michigan leads with 92.5 inches on Day 1. He has a 3.5-inch lead over Ohio’s Brian Coyne. From there, the leaderboard is jam packed. 73 anglers caught a limit.
Mansfield, an Army veteran from Florida, is in fine position, “I went from 13thto 6thin the last half-hour when I culled 4 fish. I lost one that would have made a big difference, probably 20 inches, had to be a 6-pounder. I’ll be chasing her again tomorrow.”
One of the cool things about the Catch-Photo-Release format is anglers know where they stand. The FLW Tour pros fishing upstream on Chickamauga didn’t know how well they had done until weigh in concluded. But Mansfield can take pride in knowing what his late day flurry was worth.
However, just like his bassin’ brethren on the upstream lake, Mansfield used modern technology to dissect his water and find his fish. His Garmin 9” Side Scan gave him some clues.
And as do Tour pros, kayakers put in the miles when searching for fish. “I’ve put over 100 miles on Hobie 2019 Outback during practice.” Good thing he has the Mirage Drive to pedal his craft and give his arms a break.
Once he found the right deal Mansfield camped on it. “I might have travelled 3 miles today. I have two main spots that I rotated through.”
Timing is everything. “When they want to eat, they eat. If not, you can slow down and throw a worm if you want, but they’re just not going to open their mouths.”
When they do eat, Mansfield feeds them a specific lure in a specific color. “Any other color, I can’t get them to touch it.”
He’s dialed-in like any successful pro, and there are still five anglers ahead of him on the leaderboard. Mansfield understands that consistency wins in multi-day tournaments and he aims to actually improve tomorrow. “I honestly think I can catch 90 inches if all goes well.”
The experience has been fun. “The Top 10 got on stage at the FLW Tour weigh in show. The Top 3 got to speak. Hopefully, tomorrow I’ll have something to say.”

MICHIGAN’S NELSON MOVES INTO LEAD AT FLW TOUR AT LAKE CHICKAMAUGA
Rookie Seeks First Tour Win, Brings 14-ounce Lead into Final Day
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 4, 2019) – FLW Tour rookie Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, caught four big largemouth late in the day Saturday to anchor his 25-pound, 15-ounce limit and jump to the top of the leaderboard after Day Three of the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude in Dayton, Tennessee. Nelson’s five-bass limit was one of just four brought to the scale Saturday that weighed in excess of 20 pounds, telling when you consider that the lake had pumped out 19, 20+ pound limits in the first two days of competition.
Nelson (15 bass, 65-0) will now bring a 14-ounce lead over second-place angler Yamamoto Baits pro Matt Greenblatt of Port St. Lucie, Florida, (15 bass, 64-2) – who led the tournament after Day Two – into Championship Sunday. Also in striking distance in third place, is Berkley pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, (15 bass, 62-9), local favorite Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, (15 bass, 62-2) and Polaris pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Virginia, (15 bass, 60-4).
“I feel honored to be here,” said Nelson, who, although a Tour rookie, has three career tournament wins in Costa FLW Series competition. “I had no idea that I had 25 pounds. I had a real slow day and just stuck with it and stuck with it and it started snowballing real quick at the end of the day.
“I’d been running around like Buddy (Gross), burning gas,” Nelson continued. “I was way down the lake and (FLW cameraman) Jody (White) showed up around 1:30 or 2. I caught a big one and was going to leave, then I caught another big one. So I’m getting ready to leave, then I catch another big one. Then I left and came back up the lake and I caught another big one up here. It was truly a blessing.”
Nelson’s four late-in-the-day largemouth came from similar water, but his last kicker came on a different bait. Nelson declined to mention any specifics, but did say that he was catching fish on “a couple of different baits.”
“I’m excited, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself,” Nelson said. “Yesterday I dropped the ball and only had 14 pounds. I just don’t know what will happen tomorrow. I may go out and catch 12 pounds, or I could catch 35. I’m just going to keep an open mind and work hard all day. I’ll be looking for a big bag tomorrow.”

Day One Leader John Cox Just 8 Ounces Back
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 3, 2019) – Yamamoto Baits pro Matt Greenblatt of Port St. Lucie, Florida, brought a five-bass limit of largemouth to the Dayton Boat Dock scale Friday weighing 19 pounds, 13 ounces, to vault into the lead after Day Two of the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude in Dayton, Tennessee. Greenblatt’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 43 pounds, 2 ounces gives him a slim 8-ounce advantage heading into Day Three of the four-day competition that features 165 of the world’s best bass-fishing anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.
Berkley pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, who led after Day One, fell to second place, just 8 ounces behind Greenblatt with 42-10. Former FLW Cup champion and three-time Angler of the Year Polaris pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Virginia, is just 15 ounces behind Greenblatt in third place with 42-3. The field is now cut to 30 for Saturday’s competition with only the top 10 anglers advancing to championship Sunday.
“I pretty much did the same exact thing that I did Thursday – same spot, same bait, same everything,” said Greenblatt, a six-year FLW Tour veteran with one career FLW Cup appearance. “I thought I had milked it for everything it was worth yesterday, but it replenished overnight. Hopefully there is two more days of bass in there, but I really don’t know what it has left.”
Greenblatt described his key area as a slope, in 8 to 12 feet of water.
“I don’t know why the fish are setting up there. There really is nothing there,” Greenblatt said. “Thursday I caught the heck out of them, all day long. Today it slowed down a lot – I think because of the pressure and we had a little different conditions. I’m catching fish on three different baits, and there seems to be a lot of bait in the area so hopefully it keeps them where they are.”
Greenblatt declined to name his main two baits, but did divulge that a Yamamoto Senko has also been a key piece of his arsenal this week.
“There is definitely a shallow Senko bite that is developing,” he said. “Wacky-rigged seems to be best, but I’ve got them rigged up four different ways. I’m dyeing the tail a little bit, giving them a little more to see.
“Hopefully tomorrow my area is not all blown out,” Greenblatt went on to say. “I’m going to get everything I can there and see what happens. If it’s not happening by noon I’m going to drop back, punt, and go to the dock pattern.”

Lake Chick Kicks Out 12 Limits in Excess of 20 Pounds
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 2, 2019) – A field of 165 of the best bass-fishing professionals in the world began their four-day competition for a top award of $125,000 at the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude Thursday in Dayton, Tennessee.
Berkley pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, weighed a five-bass limit of Lake Chickamauga largemouth totaling 24 pounds, 11 ounces to take the early lead after Day One. Cox holds a slim 5-ounce lead over Tour rookie Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, who caught five bass weighing 24-6, good for second place.
“This place is just awesome,” said Cox, a six-time FLW Cup qualifier. “I started out on a real big fish that I had marked in practice – she’s at least a 10 (pounder) – but I couldn’t catch her. I got frustrated and bailed and went and caught a few decent males that I had marked, then came back to her. I caught the male with her, which was a 4-pounder, so I kept it at the time. Then she left.
“I came back an hour later, and she was with another one,” Cox continued. “I accidently caught that male, and she left again. I came back at the end of the day and she was with another male. So I told her to just finish up and that I’d come back tomorrow.”
Cox said he caught six keepers– all sight fishing – but marked 10 more while looking for beds this afternoon. He said he caught his bass using a selection of Berkley PowerBait MaxScent plastics.
“It was not easy today,” Cox said. “The water is coming up and a lot of the banks are getting really stirred up. The visibility is gone on almost every spot that I stopped at. I was guessing as to where they were.
“I’m going to go out tomorrow and try to catch five more decent males and hope I can get lucky and catch a 9- or 10-pounder,” Cox went on to say. “I will stop in and see if the big female I have marked is ready, then after that I really don’t know what I’m going to do yet.”

Bassmaster College And High School Championships To Be Held On Tennessee River Lakes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — National championships for two of the fastest-growing youth and collegiate fishing circuits in the country will be held on outstanding Tennessee River fisheries, B.A.S.S. announced today.
The Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops will be held Aug. 1-3 on Chickamauga Lake at Dayton, Tenn.
In addition, the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors will return to Kentucky Lake at Paris, Tenn., for the fifth time, while the Bassmaster Junior Championship for second- through eighth-grade anglers will be held again on Carroll County 1000 Acre Recreational Lake at Huntingdon, Tenn.
The College Championship will field as many as 130 teams of anglers representing colleges and universities across the nation. Qualifications are based on the teams’ finishes in four college tour stops being held this year as well as qualifying tournaments conducted by B.A.S.S. Nation organizations in states throughout the country.
“We’re excited to host the 2019 Bassmaster College National Championship here in #BassTownUSA and Lake Chickamauga,” said Dennis Tumlin, director of Fish Dayton. “Our lake has already produced over 65 double digit bass so far this year and we know these big fish will be a factor in this year’s championship event. With the combination of these giant Florida-strain bass along with late season lake grasses, we see an exciting event shaping up. On behalf of Fish Dayton and our full leadership team, we welcome you to our angler-friendly community.”
The event will crown the 2019 Bassmaster College Series Team of the Year. In addition, anglers on the Top 3 teams will earn a chance to compete for the lone College Series berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic to be held on Lake Guntersville, Alabama, March 6-8.
Aug. 27-29, the top four teams from the championship go on to the College Bracket tournament on 39,000-acre Watts Bar Lake at Spring City, Tenn. In that competition, the four teams are split and the eight anglers compete individually for a coveted invitation to the Classic.
“Chickamauga is one of the hottest bass lakes in the country right now, and it will provide a fantastic battleground to determine the top college anglers in the world,” said Hank Weldon, senior tournament manager/high school and college fishing. “And with a Classic berth on the line, college anglers are gunning with all their might to make it to the championship. It’s going to be an event they will always remember.”
Three hundred high school teams are expected to compete on Kentucky Lake Aug. 8-10 for the high school championship crown. Each two-angler team is accompanied by a coach who runs the boat and can give advice on fishing techniques and patterns.
Student anglers qualify for the championship through four High School Opens.
“They are the best of the best among 13,000 high school B.A.S.S. members representing more than 1,300 high school fishing clubs nationwide,” Weldon said. “In addition to the 900 anglers and coaches, we expect at least 2,000 family members and friends in attendance, cheering on their favorite teams.”
“We are thrilled to once again host the High School National Championship here in Henry County at beautiful Kentucky Lake,” said Tara Wilson, administrative coordinator, Henry County Tourism Authority. “We welcome all the anglers and their families to our community and wish them all the best of luck!”
Bethel Director of Athletics Dale Kelley added, “We are honored as a school and county to be involved and serve as hosts. It provides an opportunity for both Bethel and Carroll County to make a difference and be a part of something special. This introduces so many people to our great lakes and, of course, our university. We wish everyone much success and a safe week here in West Tennessee.”
The High School Series debuted in 2013 and has grown immensely since its inception. The program emphasizes sportsmanship, academics and a conservation ethic while giving young anglers a chance to improve and test their fishing skills in competition among their peers.
Another fast-growing tournament program is the Junior Bassmaster Division, which will field up to 50 teams in that group’s championship Aug. 6 and 7 at Carroll County 1000 Acre Recreational Lake. As in the high school competitions, they will compete as two-angler teams accompanied by a coach.
“We are excited to welcome the young anglers and their families to Carroll County and west Tennessee,” said Brad Hurley, President of Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. “This is our sixth year to be a host, and our enthusiasm for the Bassmaster Junior National Championship is only growing. Clearly the championship is putting the Carroll County 1000 Acre Recreational Lake on the radar of many fishermen.”

Whatley recalls simpler times on Lake Fork

Once lightning bolts and extremely heavy rainfall finally moved safely away from Lake Fork about 90 minutes after sunrise, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Brad Whatley sat dressed in dry Carhartt raingear awaiting the National Anthem, reflecting on simpler times involving simpler lures, before chasing fat largemouth that are chewing on spawning shad.
Whatley made his living as a logging equipment expert not far up the road from Lake Fork, and won roughly $200,000 over the years on Lake O’ the Pines, Texas as an amateur angler.
But after a fantastic 2018 season in the Bassmaster Opens, he qualified for the 2019 Bassmaster Classic, and with the full support of wife Jennifer, accepted an invitation to join the Elite Series and give up the logging gig.
While you might think Whatley has probably fished Lake Fork a lot, given its closeness to his home in Bivins, Texas, he confirmed that’s not the case.
“The only time I fished here was at night way back in the day with my dad. We fished only at night here, and we’d tie our old Kingfisher boat up to a tree because we didn’t even have a trolling motor,” Whatley reflected fondly.
Lure choices were simple too. “About all Dad and I threw was a black Hildebrandt spinnerbait with a big #6 Colorado blade, or a firetail colored plastic worm. We stayed tied to the tree most all night, cast them to submerged grass beds all around us, and we’d do just fine,” remembers Whatley.
Now at age 38, things have gotten far more strategic. Whatley was eager to make his first cast after Day 1’s slight lightning delay because he knows the shad are spawning, and the bass are chewing. But that’s typically a low light bite. The earlier you make that first cast, the better your chances.
“I’ll start the day running secondary and primary points, alternating between a topwater and this “wild shad” colored squarebill from 6thSense. Some of the points are so covered in brush and timber that you can’t hardly get a crankbait through them. But the topwater and sqaurebill are a good one-two punch when you’re chasing the shad spawn,” he says.
Whatley says the sqaurebill will run about 4’ deep on 20-pound fluorocarbon. And if the shad spawn pattern dies, he’ll move to target spawning bass around shallow grass lines.
But even before big thumper spinnerbaits and firetail worms entered Whatley’s tackle box, it was an equally simple Beetle Spin that first filled his soul with a passion for bass fishing ate age four when he won $50 in a kid’s derby on the little multi-species spinner.
Today, let’s cheer for the 5’ 8” God-fearing family man and his signature goatee facial hair to chase down five fat Lake Fork largemouth amid the shad spawn.
Certainly, you can bet he’s fueled by a heart full of memories made in a boat tied to a tree amid night fishing trips here on Lake Fork with his dad Keith. Those were simpler times that ultimately spawned a pro career.

Texas Fest: Combs is Very Confident

A huge number of Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing Fans picked Keith Combs to do very well at this week’s Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
And rightfully so. Combs has won three previous Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest events, including the 2014 event on Lake Fork when he hauled a massive 110 pounds of fat largemouth to the scales in just three days of competition. Heck, it’d take a tax account ten minutes to add up all the prize money and Toyota Trucks Bonus Bucks he’s earned from this event.
And the crazy thing is, Lake Fork is not even Combs’ home lake. While many predict his prowess here this week could be jeopardized by clouds, rain, current, and a somewhat lagging post-spawn migration, a conversation with him on the eve of this super cool derby suggested he was feeling just fine about his chances.
Q: Okay, don’t fib to us, what’s the biggest bass you’ve had your hands on in practice?
Combs:A 9-pounder.
Q: What’s the biggest bass you’ve weighed-in during previous events here?
Combs:A 10 pound 14 ounce bass in 2014 that I caught on a Strike King 10XD tied to 15-pound fluorocarbon.
Q: Name three lures you think fans can expect pros to throw a lot here this week?
Combs:a 10XD crankbait, a ¾ ounce pitching jig, and a ½ ounce swim jig.
Q: What’s going to surprise fans most about this event?
Combs:We’re going to see a lot of great 5-bass limits caught, but probably not the huge number of 30-pound limits some people are saying we’ll catch.
Q: Give you’re confidence level a letter grade right now.
Combs: I’d give it an “A”
Q: Chris Knight is playing a concert here at Texas Fest on Saturday. What music are you listening to these days?
Combs:Man, you threw me a curveball. I thought this was all about bass fishing. I’ll tell ya, man, I’m an old soul, so I just ride around in the Tundra listening to country music on FM radio most days.

High water and rain hindering Fork’s home field advantage

Few anglers on the planet understand the behavior of Lake Fork’s big bass better than James Caldemeyer. The Iowa native moved to the region at age 19, that’s when his dad introduced him to bass fishing on the famous 27,000 acre reservoir, and for the past 15 years, he’s made a full-time living guiding clients to their fish of a lifetime.
Easily recognized by the large “I Am Second” graphics on his Toyota Tundra and Ranger Boat, the 45-year-old Caldemeyer says an already full Lake Fork will fish very different than fans of Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest have seen in past events here.
“Fork is already filled to the brim because of all the rain we’ve had, and we’ve got a lot more heavy rain on the way the next couple days. That forces the Sabine River Authority to open the gates at the dam to release water, which causes current to flow through our reservoir. And unlike most any reservoir in the country, current seems to hinder the bite here, rather than help it,” he explains.
Typically, this is the time of year when giants like the 13 pound 7 ounce fiberglass replica you see Caldemeyer holding in the photo finish spawning, migrate deep, school up, and fall for deep crankbaits, football jigs, and Carolina Rigs. But that’s simply not the dominant pattern this week according to Caldemeyer.
“Not only do you still have bass in all three phases of the spawn this week, but you also have a shad spawn taking place. Combine the shad spawn with clouds and rain, and you can count on the big gizzard shad to stay shallow pretty much all day. And that’s what big bass love to eat here,” he says.
With Fork’s groceries staying shallow, Caldemeyer predicts topwater lures like Berkley’s Choppo, as well as big swimbaits, will be major players this week.
“If I had to pick one swimbait to throw this week it would be a 6.75” Rising Son from 3:16 Lure Company, it’s an awesome gizzard shad imitator!” he says passionately.
However, as much as Caldemeyer loves to throw a swimbait, he knows it can be an all or nothing lure, hence he says he’d definitely have a shallow squarebill crankbait tied on as a “limit getter” in the shallows.
“I really think this tournament is kind of anybody’s ballgame to win this week. You’ll see guys froggin’ and pitching Texas-rigged plastics, doing all sorts of things to find a consistent pattern, but the pattern we’ve seen in this event during previous years where a guy with lots of local knowledge wins on a couple mega-schools out deep is highly unlikely this week,” he concludes.
That said, he predicts it will still take a mighty impressive average of 26 pounds per day to win the prestigious 4-day derby.
Caldemeyer should know. Few folks on earth have a better feel for Fork’s giant bass than the guy who makes a living slinging swimbaits from the front deck of the “I Am Second” boat.

Littleton & Neumann win Anglers Quest Houston Team with over 15 pounds!

Lake Houston Marina was host to 17 Anglers Quest Teams this past Saturday. There were 12 limits caught, 72 fish, 164.64 total pounds and that made for a 2.28 pound average bass.
The team of John Littleton & Tim Neumann came in first place with their 5 fish limit that weighed 15.67 lbs and won
$1,250.00 for their day on the water. John reported fishing out of a BassCat powered by Mecury. He said they fished mostly north in the pads on frogs in 2-3 feet of water and that they culled some on boat docks. They would like to thank Texas Elite Electrical Services, Kistler Rods and Stanley Baits.
Curtis Jordan & Brandon Flowers came in second and had Big Bass of the day. These guys took home a total of $950.00 for their day on the water.
Clayton Smith & Ben Pope came in third winning $500.00 for their day on the water.
Craig Austin & Byron Smith got their choice of the Larry the Lizard Baits for their fourth place finish.

Moore & Caries win ABA 150 Event on Lake Norman with over 16 pounds!
ATHENS, Ala. – The team of Richard Moore of Clover SC and Chris Carnes of York SC won the Bass Pro Shops 150 series team event held on Lake Norman on 4/27/19. The team sacked up a five bass limit weighing 16.34 pounds. Their limit was anchored by a bass weighing 4.42 pounds. For the win Moore and Carnes took home a fully rigged Tracker Pro Team 175 XTE Tournament edition boat with a 75 HP Mercury 4 stroke motor valued at $20,000.00.
“Things for us really started out slow. We were just catching smaller fish. We pulled into a pocket and found a lot better quality of fish. We caught most of our fish on a shakeyhead,” said Moore.
In second place the team of Brent Rankin of Mt. Holly NC and Ron Moore of Indian Trail NC weighed in a five bass limit weighing 15.08 pounds. Their limit was anchored by a bass weighing 5.37 pounds which was the biggest bass weighed in.
“We caught a lot of fish today, but the better fish came from a 100-yard stretch of grass.
We caught three on a chatter bait and two on a red eye shad,” said Rankin.
Taking third the team of Jonathan Lutz of Dallas NC and TJ Harris weighed in a five bass limit weighing 15.01 pounds. Their limit was anchored by a bass weighing 4.09 pounds.
“We caught all of our fish on a True South jig in Green Pumpkin. We fished docks and the fish were positioned anywhere from the backs to the fronts of the docks,” said Lutz
In fourth place the team of Tommy Murphy Jr. of Newton NC and Matthew Burke of Weddington NC weighed in five bass for 12.90 pounds. Rounding out the top five the team of Conner Alms of Mooresville NC and Troy Lehew of Charlotte NC weighed in five bass for 12.29 pounds.
In total this tournament paid back 100% of the entries and big bass bringing the total payback at $28,400.00.
The top 20 teams from this event will have the opportunity to compete in the Bass Pro Shops 150 Series championship to be held on Table Rock Lake in Branson MO in September 2019. The winning team at the championship will receive (2) Tracker Pro Team 195 XTE Tournament Edition Boats powered by a 150 hp Mercury four stroke engine.

PALISADES HIGH SCHOOL WINS 2019 BASS PRO SHOPS FLW HIGH SCHOOL FISHING SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE OPEN
BEDFORD, Va. (April 29, 2019) – The Palisades High School duo of Brandon Lawson of Kintnersville, Pennsylvania, and Parker Lambert of Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 12 pounds, 15 ounces to win the 2019 Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Smith Mountain Lake Open.
A field of 22 teams competed in the no-entry fee tournament, which launched from the Parkway Marina in Huddleston. The tournament was hosted by Bedford Tourism and the Bedford Area Welcome Center. In FLW and The Bass Federation (TBF) High School Fishing competition, the top 10-percent of teams competing advance to the High School Fishing National Championship.
The top two teams on Smith Mountain Lake that advanced to the 2019 High School Fishing National Championship were:

The 2019 Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Smith Mountain Lake Open was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 7-12, open to any Student Angler Federation (SAF) affiliated high school club in the United States. The top 10 percent of each Challenge, Open, and state championship field will advance to the 2019 High School Fishing National Championship on a body of water that has yet to be revealed. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest open high school bass tournament, the 2019 High School Fishing World Finals, held in conjunction with the National Championship. At the 2018 World Finals more than $150,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded.

EDMOND’S LILLIE WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON EUFAULA LAKE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS
Checotah’s Duvall Takes Co-Angler Division
EUFAULA, Okla. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Justin Lillie of Edmond, Oklahoma, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division tournament on Eufaula Lake presented by Navionics Sunday with five bass weighing 18 pounds, 8 ounces. Lillie earned $4,259 for his day on the water.
“I basically fished around the dam on the upper side of the lake 20 miles from takeoff and caught five keepers,” said Lillie, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I focused on postspawn bass around rock ledges. I had five locations I caught fish at, just running different little rock ledges and outcroppings.
“I worked in 6 to 10 feet of water,” continued Lillie. “I caught the biggest fish – my first – about 10 minutes in, and then one keeper every two hours after that.”
Lillie said he used a ¾- or 1-ounce white and chartreuse-colored Nichols Pulsator Metal Flake Double Willow spinnerbait with a chartreuse Zoom Fat Albert Grub trailer on 20-pound-test P-Line Tactical Fluorocarbon line, and a 7-foot, 5-inch Halo TI Series heavy-action rod with an Ardent C-Force 7:1 reel. He also weighed one on a shaky-head rig with a darker-colored Zoom Magnum Trick Worm.

Jase Morris of Edmond, Oklahoma, caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $272.
The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Gilbertsville, Kentucky, presented by Evinrude. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.
The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2019 BFL All-American will be held May 30-June 1 at the Potomac River in Marbury, Maryland, and is hosted by the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism and the Commissioners of Charles County. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

THE APPRENTICE SCHOOL WINS YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE OPENER ON SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE PRESENTED BY COSTA
BEDFORD, Va. (April 29, 2019) – The Apprentice School duo of Hunter Atkins of Carrsville, Virginia, and Kitt Moger of Suffolk, Virginia, won the YETI FLW College Fishing event on Smith Mountain Lake presented by Costa Friday with a five-bass limit weighing 16 pounds, 6 ounces. The victory earned the Builders’ bass club $2,400 and a slot in the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship.
It was the second consecutive year that the duo of Atkins and Moger won the FLW College Fishing event on Smith Mountain Lake, and Atkins credited their sight-fishing skills as the key to their tournament wins.
“We’ve only been to this lake three times – all three for a tournament – and we finished fourth, first and first,” said Atkins, a senior majoring in business management. “Kitt and I work real well together when we’re targeting beds, alternating casts and keeping a bait in front of the fish at all times. Smith Mountain Lake is also very similar to some of the lakes we have by our house and we’ve got a lot of practice bed fishing.”
“We spent a full day on the water Thursday, just prior to the tournament, and we were on the water from sun up to sun down, just looking for and marking fish on beds,” said Moger, a third year Outside Machinist Apprentice at Newport News Shipbuilding. “I think that was the key to our win – persistence. We wore that trolling motor out and didn’t even really fish – we just looked for fish on the bed.”
The duo said they came in to the tournament with around a dozen fish marked and they were able to put 11 keepers in the boat. They flipped Texas-rigged Strike King Rage Craws and Rage Lobsters, both black-and-blue-colored.
“I think the key was knowing how to sight fish,” Atkins went on to say. “We ran into a couple of very large fish, but after a few casts we knew we were wasting our time. You have to know when it’s going to bite and when to leave it alone. Luckily we ran into some that were ready.”

The YETI FLW College Fishing event on Smith Mountain Lake presented by Costa was hosted by Bedford Tourism and the Bedford Area Welcome Center. It was the first of three regular-season qualifying tournaments for Northern Conference anglers. The next event for FLW College Fishing anglers will be May 31 at the Chesapeake Bay in Harford County, Maryland.
YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school. The top 10 teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship. Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats. The Potomac River and Marbury, Maryland, will play host to the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship, June 4-6, 2019.

LEXINGTON’S WALSER WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON KERR LAKE
Co-Angler Title Goes to Shelby’s Scism
HENDERSON, N.C. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Robert Walser of Lexington, North Carolina, brought five bass to the weigh-in stage totaling 15 pounds, 10 ounces, to win Saturday’s T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) North Carolina Division tournament on Kerr Lake. For his efforts, Walser took home $5,718.
“I fished flooded bushes and trees, mid-lake, along an approximately 20-mile stretch,” said Walser, who logged his 12th career win in BFL competition – tied for second most all-time. “I used a spinnerbait early, and then I flipped.”
Walser said he used a ½-ounce white-colored Rush Lures double-willow-bladed spinnerbait with a chartreuse and silver glitter Zoom Split Tail trailer on 20-pound-test Berkley Big Game line. He flipped a green-pumpkin Zoom Baby Brush Hog with a 3/0-sized Berkley Fusion 19 EWG hook and a 3/8-ounce Eco Pro tungsten flipping weight. For flipping, he opted for 20-pound-test Berkley Trilene 100-percent fluorocarbon line.
“I caught more than 30 keepers. It was hard initially, but after it warmed up it got easier,” said Walser. “We had a severe cold front come through Friday afternoon and the temperatures dropped rapidly – maybe 20 degrees in 30 minutes. It rained following the temperature change, so we had a few hours of cold rain. I think it had an effect on the fish I was targeting, but after noontime I caught four or five limits.”
Walser said he ended up weighing one off the spinnerbait, and the rest from the Brush Hog.
“Some of those spinnerbait fish in the morning were at those deeper bushes, and my Garmin Panoptix showed me the submerged bushes I couldn’t see, which really helped me out,” said Walser.

ELIZABETHTON’S SMITH WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON DOUGLAS LAKE
Johnson Wins Co-Angler Division
KODAK, Tenn. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Kyle Smith of Elizabethton, Tennessee, caught five bass Saturday weighing 17 pounds, 11 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Volunteer Division tournament on Douglas Lake. For his victory, Smith was awarded $4,384.
Smith said he started the tournament fishing around the Interstate 40 Bridge and worked his way to the Dandridge Bridge as the day progressed. He initially threw a wacky-rigged green pumpkin-colored V&M Chopstick on a Dobyns Champion XP704SF rod, targeting spawning fish on flats and in pockets around laydowns.
“I caught the heaviest fish of my day early – a 4-pound, 11-ouncer – so the day started out really well,” said Smith, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “I caught a couple more on the Chopstick then switched over to a spinnerbait around 10 [a.m.] and targeted deeper bushes and points with rock.”
Smith used a ½-ounce chartreuse and white-colored Dobyns D-Blade Beast spinnerbait with a glimmer blue-colored FoolinBass Custom Baits twin-tailed grub trailer on a Dobyns Champion XP733C rod. He noted that his Lowrance electronics were also crucial to his success, helping him stay in the right depth range on the points.
“I probably boated 25 keepers throughout the day,” said Smith. “In the late afternoon I ended up culling two fish in the last hour with the spinnerbait. It was a great day of fishing.”

KINTA’S KING WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON EUFAULA LAKE
Yukon’s Symes Takes Co-Angler Division
EUFAULA, Okla. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Brett King of Kinta, Oklahoma, caught five bass Saturday weighing 21 pounds, 2 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division tournament on Eufaula Lake. King netted $4,127 for his efforts.
King said he slow-rolled spinnerbaits to earn his win. He said he used a ½-ounce black and chartreuse-colored Booyah Single Colorado Blade spinnerbait with a pearl-colored YUM Pulse swimbait before switching to a ½-ounce white, blue and chartreuse Booyah Double Colorado in the afternoon with the same trailer.
“I was throwing on small channel swing banks,” said King, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “I had two stretches about 50 yards long around the Oak Ridge Cove area that had channel swings and little sandy points with laydown logs. The fish were pulling out of spawning pockets and heading back out to the main lake.
“Both stretches were equally productive,” King continued. “I didn’t start catching them until about 10:30 [a.m.] and I caught my last keeper at 1:30 [p.m.].
In total, King said he caught eight keepers throughout his day.

WEST FRANKFORT’S SHORAGA WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OPENER ON REND LAKE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS
Edwardsville’s Greco Grabs Co-Angler Title
WHITTINGTON, Ill. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Dan Shoraga of West Frankfort, Illinois, brought five bass to the weigh-in stage Saturday totaling 12 pounds, 5 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division opener on Rend Lake presented by Navionics. For his victory, Shoraga pocketed $6,185.
“I decided to stay on the south end of the lake and had one primary spot that I stayed in pretty much all day – the Sandusky area,” said Shoraga, who earned his third win in BFL competition. “I’d found the fish a week before. The water came up about 10 inches so they’d pulled a little bit, but I was able to still get about eight bites, including five keepers.”
Shoraga said he flipped shallow willow trees, with the fish coming from about 2 feet of water. He caught four he weighed on a Texas-rigged black and blue- or black neon-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver with a 3/8-ounce weight, and one on a 3/8-ounce homemade white and chartreuse spinnerbait. He said he preferred the black neon Sweet Beaver for dirtier water.
“My Power-Poles were a big part of my day,” said Shoraga. “I knew some of the fish were on beds even though you couldn’t see them, and sometimes times it’d take three or four bites before I’d hook them. I had to sit there with the poles down knowing that they’d bite after a few tries.”

ZIMBABWE, NAMIBIA ANNOUNCED AS LATEST COUNTRIES TO JOIN FLW INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONING
TEN COUNTRIES NOW SANCTIONING INTERNATIONAL FLW BASS FISHING TOURNAMENTS
MINNEAPOLIS (April 29, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, announced today that Zimbabwe and Namibia have become the latest countries to offer anglers the opportunity to compete in FLW sanctioned bass fishing tournaments in 2019.
Both Zimbabwe and Namibia will run a series of FLW tournaments that advance anglers, who are citizens of that country, to the International Division at the Costa FLW Series Championship beginning in 2019. One angler from each country will compete as a pro, with FLW providing a fully-rigged Ranger boat, and one angler from each country will compete as a co-angler.
In addition to its adult tournaments, Zimbabwe will be running a series of High School Fishing tournaments and will be sending at least one team to the United States to compete in the 2019 FLW/TBF High School Fishing World Finals.
Both countries will operate under the direction of FLW South Africa president Hannes Lindeque with local supervision provided by Clint Skinner in Zimbabwe and Neil Engelbrecht in Namibia.
“We are so excited to have this chance to showcase our anglers to the world,” said Skinner. “Zimbabwe may be small and struggling in many ways, but our anglers can beat all comers. With the help of our sponsors, we look forward to sending both student and adult anglers to compete on the biggest stage in the bass fishing world through FLW Zimbabwe.”
In 2017 FLW South Africa’s Michael Matthee made history by winning the international division at the Costa FLW Series Championship on Kentucky Lake and becoming the first international angler to finish in the top 10. Matthee is competing on the FLW Tour this season and recently finished second on Grand Lake.
“Michael is living the dream at this moment and stands a great chance of being a professional angler for the rest of his life thanks to FLW,” said Engelbrecht. “FLW’s core values emulate our own, which makes launching FLW Namibia an easy decision.”
The top pro award at the Costa FLW Series Championship is $100,000, including a Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower outboard if the pro is Ranger Cup qualified, and the top co-angler award is a Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower outboard. The highest finishing pro from the International Division at the Costa FLW Series Championship advances to the following year’s FLW Cup for the chance to compete on the sport’s biggest stage.
FLW Canada’s Erik Luzak was the highest finishing International pro at the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship and will represent the FLW International Division at the 2019 FLW Cup on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

We have long touted our FLW anglers as the best in the world, and with the integration of the international division into the Costa FLW Series, we are truly seeing global competition.”
Zimbabwe and Namibia are the ninth and tenth countries represented in FLW’s international sanctioning program, joining Canada, China, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and South Korea.

Chad and Ryan Hall Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Weiss Lake

April 27, 2019 – Centre, Ala. – Weiss Lake has become one of the more interesting events on the Alabama Bass Trail’s Northern Division schedule since it made its first appearance on it. While the lake is known as the Crappie Capital of the World, Weiss features tremendous opportunities for both largemouth and Coosa River spotted bass.
As a result, one never quite knows what it will take to win here, there is always a chance of a bag loaded with each, or a mixed bag, and the weights can be impressive. Then – as with any other fishery – the lake can surprise you with a change from day-to-day. That was the result of the third stop on the ABT Northern Division schedule, when the weights fell slightly lower than expected.
The team of Chad and Ryan Hall brought an impressive 19.75-pound limit to the scales at Leesburg Landing, and never expected it to be the winning weight; but, it was. The pair walked away with the $10,000 winner’s share of the purse and an automatic bid into the 2019 ABT Championship on Lake Guntersville.
To say they were surprised by the outcome was an understatement. “We never expected that this weight would hold up to win,” they said. “We figured that it would be worth a top 10 possibly, but this is the best trail with the best anglers in the state, and it means so much to be here.”
They said they caught big numbers of fish in the midlake area, but didn’t expect to have the weights they did. “Practice was miserable, and we caught a bunch of fish, but didn’t find the weight to be good; today was much better for size,” they reported. “We fished grass and docks shallow and caught somewhere around 40 fish on white swim jigs and flipping green pumpkin Sweet Beavers – it was a good day.”
Damien Willis and Tyler Kiker; winners of the Wheeler Lake event earlier this season, posted 18.64 pounds to finish the day in second place, earning the $5,000 runners up prize. They said spent their morning running around looking for spawning fish, before stumbling onto a postspawn spinnerbait pattern that proved to be the ticket. “We should have recognized it earlier, but we caught our big fish on a chartreuse and white spinnerbait at around eleven o’clock, and the light went on,” they said. “We certainly wish we would have discovered it before, but this will give us good points in the standings, so we’re pleased.”
The “big fish” that Willis and Kiker landed did more than clue them into the pattern for the day, it also ended being the Mountain Dew Big Bass of the event. The 6.27-pound largemouth anchored their limit and earned them an additional $500 bonus for catching the day’s largest fish.
The team of Payton McGinnis and John Davis caught 18.20 pounds and finished the day in third place, earning $4,000 in the process.
The Southern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail hits the water next at the Pickwick Lake on May 11.

BEAVERS WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT ON SANTEE COOPER LAKES
South Carolina pro Earns Third Career Victory– Second on Santee Cooper –and earns $86,700
SUMMERTON, S.C. (April 27, 2019) – Pro Bradford Beavers of Summerville, South Carolina, caught a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 7 ounces, to win the weather-shortened Costa FLW Series on Santee Cooper Lakes presented by Power-Pole. The tournament was shortened from three days to two after competition was cancelled Friday due to high winds. Bradford’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 54 pounds, 9 ounces, was enough to earn him the victory at the Southeastern Division finale and $86,700, including a new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
“To win on my home lake is quite an accomplishment,” said Beavers, who won the Costa FLW Series Championship on Kentucky Lake in 2017. “I know how good the anglers are here, and it’s a little redemption for the 2014 [FLW Series] event here. I started that final day in second place, but zeroed and ended up finishing ninth. That’s been on my mind for years, so this is great.”
Beavers said he started out fishing on Lake Moultrie each day, targeting shallow cypress trees.
“I started at the best cypress trees I knew of, where the bass were either spawning or coming off the bank,” said Beavers. “I had four areas of trees that I fished there.”
Beavers said that he headed to Lake Marion around 1 p.m. each day, running pretty much ran the same pattern in two general areas, but with one small adjustment.
“I fished even shallower trees on Lake Marion because I felt more [bass] were truly spawning on the upper lake versus Lake Moultrie, so I’d hit trees more in the pocket rather than out in the open,” said Beavers.
The South Carolina pro said he caught seven keepers Thursday and added another nine today. He weighed nearly every fish from a wacky- or Texas-rigged, 5-inch green-pumpkin Yamamoto Senko. One keeper each day came on an Eye Strike Texas Eye jighead with a 3.3-inch shad-colored Keitech swimbait.
“The Eye Strike is like a wobble head with an eye protruding from it. I’d throw it the first 30 minutes because I felt there was a shad spawn going on.”

Watson weighed a 9-pound bass Saturday – the heaviest of the tournament in the Pro Division and earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $300.
Rodney Tapp of North Augusta, South Carolina, won the Co-angler Division with a two-day total catch of 10 bass weighing 32 pounds, 10 ounces. For his win, Tapp took home a prize package including a Ranger Z175 with a 115-horsepower outboard motor.

Jamie Booth of Erin, Tennessee, caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Friday, a fish weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces. Booth earned the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $200 for his catch.
The Costa FLW Series on Santee Cooper Lakes presented by Power-Pole was hosted by the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce. It was the third and final Southeastern Division tournament of the 2019 regular season. The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky.

FLW TOUR SET TO VISIT LAKE CHICKAMAUGA FOR SIXTH EVENT OF SEASON
Dayton to Host 168 Anglers Casting for $125,000 Top Prize in Four-Day Event
DAYTON, Tenn. (April 22, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament fishing organization, is set to continue the 2019 FLW Tour season – the 24th season of the competitive Tour – next week, May 2-5, with the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude. Hosted by Fish Dayton and the Rhea Economic Tourism Council, the tournament will feature 168 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals competing for a top award of up to $125,000 and valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup – the world championship of bass fishing.
The FLW Tour has visited Lake Chickamauga four times prior in FLW’s 24-year history. When the Tour visited the East Tennessee fishery in 2015, some of the biggest names in the sport ended up competing on Championship Sunday, including former Forrest Wood Cup champion David Dudley and legendary angler Larry Nixon. Pro Michael Wooley, then of Collierville, Tennessee, won the event, weighing 20 bass totaling 92 pounds, 4 ounces, focusing on a shell bar in Dallas Bay with a shaky-head rig and a football-head jig.
The 2019 event will mark the 216th tournament in FLW Tour history. The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude is more than $860,000.
“This tournament is going to be one of the most fun events that we have all year,” said FLW Tour rookie Miles Burghoff of Hixson, Tennessee, who is currently leading both the Angler of the Year (AOY) and Rookie of the Year (ROY) point races with just two events remaining in the season. “Dayton, Tennessee is the most bass-friendly town that I have ever been to and the best bass-fishing community that I have ever seen. It’s going to be great fishing and great crowds all week.”
Burghoff predicted that the majority of the bass would be spawn or post-spawn, and he expects that competitors will be able to fish however they would like to.
“We’re going to have guys that fish the ledges and do great, and we’ll have guys that avoid the ledges and fish shallow that will do great,” Burghoff said. “I think the key will be having multiple options. I don’t think you can win off of one spot very easily. It’s possible, but there are no secrets on Chickamauga – especially offshore. In order to win, you’re going to have to stay fluid and have a few back up plans ready to go.”
Burghoff predicted that standard Tennessee River-tackle would be in play – big spoons, jigs and swimbaits are all expected to play a role for tournament competitors. Burghoff also predicted that many of the FLW Tour pros would likely be seen throwing topwater baits for the first time this season.
“We’re hitting the lake perfectly and there will be plenty of fish well into their summertime patterns,” he said. “I think it’ll take at least a 15-pound-a-day average to make the top-30 cut to fish the weekend. I think it’ll take a four-day total of 87 to 88 pounds to win. It could be a little high, but it’s Lake Chickamauga and we’re going to crush them.”
Anglers will take off at 6:30 a.m. ET Thursday through Sunday from the Dayton Boat Dock, located at 175 Lakeshore St., in Dayton. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, May 2-3, will be held at the park beginning at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, May 4-5, will also be held at the park, but will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Prior to the weigh-ins, FLW will host a free Family Fishing Expo at the Dayton Boat Dock from 2 to 6 p.m. each day. The Expo is a chance for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.
Also for youth, the FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby will be held at the Dayton Boat Dock on Saturday, May 4, from Noon-2 p.m. The event is hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, and is free and open to anyone under the age of 18 and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one. The 1st and 2nd place anglers that catch the biggest fish will be recognized Saturday on the FLW Tour stage, just prior to the pros weighing in.
As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, FLW Tour anglers will visit shoppers and staff at We Care, a second-hand store benefitting the Safe Haven Light Family Transitional Shelter, located at 420 Market Street in Dayton on Wednesday, May 1 from 3-4:30 p.m. to interact with guests, snap photos and sign autographs, give away goodie bags and share fishing stories.
Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude will premiere in 2019. The Emmy-nominated "FLW" television show airs each Saturday night at 7 p.m. EST and is broadcast to more than 63 million cable, satellite and telecommunications households in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean on the World Fishing Network (WFN), the leading entertainment destination and digital resource for anglers throughout North America. The popular FLW Live on-the-water program will air on Days Three and Four of the event, featuring live action from the boats of the tournament’s top pros each day. In FLW Tour competition, the full field of 168 pro anglers compete in the two-day opening round on Thursday and Friday. The top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.
Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2019 FLW Cup will be on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 9-11 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.
